Everything about booking, pick-up, cover and life on the road.
Booking
How far in advance do I need to book?+
Bookings need to be made at least 21 days before pick-up. That gives us time to lock in a checked vehicle with one of our local partners. Trips can last between 5 and 60 days.
Do I pay everything up front?+
Yes. You pay the full price online by card when you book, in US dollars. Reservations you haven't paid yet can be discarded for free.
What does “or similar” mean?+
You book a vehicle category, not a specific model. Mate Classic is a Renault Kangoo or similar, Mate Grande a Toyota HiAce or similar. The exact model can vary, and we confirm your vehicle by email at the latest 7 days before pick-up.
Can I do a one-way trip?+
Yes! You pick up in Buenos Aires or Córdoba (Villa Carlos Paz) and can drop off in Mendoza, Salta, Bariloche or Montevideo, as offered in the booking form. For Montevideo the border permit is mandatory.
Do you have promo codes?+
From time to time we share promo codes, for example in our newsletter or through our partners. If you have one, enter it during booking and the discount is applied to your total.
What are relocation deals?+
Relocation deals are discounted one-way trips that help us bring vans back to where they are needed. They come with fixed routes and limited dates, so if your plans are flexible, they're a great way to travel for less.
Why are some dates not available?+
Our vehicles come from local partners, so availability is limited, especially in high season. If your dates are not available, try shifting them by a few days or choosing another pick-up location.
Cancellation
How do I cancel my booking?+
Use the cancellation link on your booking page. You'll see the refund amount before you confirm.
How much do I get back if I cancel?+
You get 100 % back if you cancel at least 21 days before pick-up, or at any time as long as no partner vehicle has been confirmed yet. Between 20 and 7 days before pick-up (with a confirmed vehicle) you get 50 % back. Less than 7 days before pick-up or no-show: no refund.
What if Mate can't find a vehicle for me?+
If we can't secure a vehicle for your booking, we cancel it and refund 100 % of what you paid. We'll let you know as early as possible.
I started a booking but didn't pay. Do I need to cancel?+
No. Unpaid reservations are not binding and can be discarded for free at any time.
Can I change my dates instead of cancelling?+
Send us a message with the new dates and we'll check availability with our partners. Changes depend on availability and may change the price.
Do I get money back if I return the van early?+
Unfortunately not. Unused days are not refunded once the trip has started.
Pick-up & return
What is the online check-in?+
Before your trip you enter the driver data and upload photos of the driving licence and passport via your booking page. This lets us prepare everything with the vehicle partner so the handover is quick.
Which documents do I need at pick-up?+
Bring your passport, your driving licence (held for at least 1 year) and, if your licence is not from Latin America, an International Driving Permit. You also need a credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit.
When can I pick up the van?+
Pick-ups usually take place Monday to Saturday between 9:00 and 17:00. The exact time is confirmed together with your vehicle.
Where is the depot?+
The depot address is sent to you with the vehicle confirmation, at the latest 7 days before pick-up. It depends on the vehicle partner assigned to your booking.
How do I get from the airport to the depot?+
From Ezeiza (EZE) or Aeroparque (AEP) in Buenos Aires the easiest way is a taxi or a rideshare app. We recommend arriving the day before your pick-up so you start the trip rested.
What happens at pick-up?+
You and the vehicle partner check the van together and record its condition in the handover protocol, which you sign. Take your time and make sure all existing scratches and dents are noted.
What do I need to know about the return?+
Return the van at the agreed place and time, with the same fuel level as at pick-up and broom-clean inside. Late returns without prior agreement, heavy dirt or missing fuel may be charged.
Vehicles
What's the difference between Mate Classic and Mate Grande?+
Mate Classic (Renault Kangoo or similar) is compact, nimble and manual, perfect for couples on a budget. Mate Grande (Toyota HiAce or similar) is roomier, automatic and has more space for cooking and storage. Both sleep 2 people.
Are the vans manual or automatic?+
Mate Classic has a manual transmission, Mate Grande an automatic one. If you're not used to driving manual, Grande is the relaxed choice.
How many people can travel?+
Both categories are designed for 2 people, with a bed for 2.
What's included in the van?+
Bedding, pillows, cooking gear and a mate kit are included. You can add extras like a camping kit, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot or snow chains during booking.
Is there a kitchen?+
Every van comes with cooking gear so you can prepare simple meals on the road. The Grande offers more space for cooking than the Classic.
Can I charge my phone and devices?+
The charging options depend on the vehicle. The vehicle partner shows you everything at pick-up, and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is available as an extra.
Can I stand up inside?+
No, our vans don't have standing height. They're designed for sleeping, sitting and storing your stuff, while life happens outside.
Can I bring my pet or smoke in the van?+
Sorry, pets and smoking are not allowed in the vehicles.
Cover & deposit
Which cover options are there?+
Básico is included and has an excess of up to US$1,600. Tranquilo (US$15/day) lowers the excess to US$350 and includes gravel roads. Total (US$25/day) has no excess and includes gravel roads, windscreen and tyres.
How does the security deposit work?+
The deposit is held on your credit card by the vehicle partner at pick-up and released after a proper return. It's US$800 with Básico, US$350 with Tranquilo and US$150 (for fuel and cleaning) with Total.
Can I use a debit card for the deposit?+
No, you need a credit card for the deposit, because it is held as a card hold. Debit and prepaid cards are not accepted for this.
What is never covered?+
Damage from driving under the influence, unauthorised drivers, off-road driving (gravel roads are fine), unauthorised border crossings or intentional damage is never covered. Neither are interior damage by negligence, lost keys, fines or tolls.
Can I change my cover after booking?+
Write to us before your trip and we'll check whether we can upgrade your cover. The cover is chosen at booking and applies to the whole rental.
Which cover do you recommend?+
If you plan to drive on gravel roads, which is common in Patagonia and the north-west, choose at least Tranquilo. If you want zero worries, Total is the way to go.
On the road
Is there a kilometre limit?+
No, all rentals include unlimited kilometres. Drive as far as the road takes you.
What do I do in case of a breakdown or emergency?+
Call the emergency number in your handover documents, the breakdown assistance is provided by the vehicle partner's insurance. In case of an accident, also call the police. You can always reach Mate support via WhatsApp or email.
What about fuel?+
You pay for fuel during the trip and return the van with the same level as at pick-up. In remote areas, fill up whenever you can, petrol stations can be far apart.
Can I drive on gravel roads?+
Yes, gravel roads (ripio) are allowed, and they're part of many great routes. Damage on gravel roads is included with Tranquilo and Total. Real off-road driving is not allowed.
Can I camp wherever I want?+
Wild camping is tolerated in many places in Argentina, but always respect local signs, private property and nature. Campsites are a safe and social option, and you leave no trace.
Are there restrictions on the Uruguayan coast?+
Yes. In the department of Maldonado (for example around Punta del Este) sleeping overnight in a vehicle outside campsites is restricted. Plan to stay at a campsite there.
Border crossings
Can I cross the border with the van?+
Yes, to Uruguay, Chile and Brazil, but only with the border permit (US$130 per trip). It must be arranged before the trip, so add it during booking.
Is the border permit mandatory for Montevideo?+
Yes, if you drop off in Montevideo the border permit is mandatory, so make sure it's part of your booking.
Which countries can I visit?+
With the border permit you can drive to Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. Other countries are not permitted.
Which documents do I need at the border?+
Bring your passport, your driving licence and International Driving Permit if needed, plus the vehicle documents including the border permit. Check the entry requirements for your nationality before you travel.
What should I know about entering Chile?+
Chile's agricultural service (SAG) has strict food rules. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, honey and seeds are generally not allowed. Declare all food on the form and eat or throw away fresh food before the border to avoid fines.
What if I cross without a permit?+
Crossing without a permit is not allowed and is never covered by any cover option. You would be liable for all damage and costs.
Payments
In which currency do I pay?+
All prices are in US dollars (USD). Your bank may convert the amount to your own currency.
How can I pay?+
You pay online by card when you book. Payments are processed securely by Stripe, and we never store your card data.
How long does a refund take?+
Refunds go back to the original card. Depending on your bank, it usually takes 5 to 10 business days until you see the money.
Do I get a receipt?+
Yes, you receive a payment confirmation by email after booking. If you need a receipt with specific details, just write to us.
Which costs are not included in the price?+
Fuel, tolls, parking and traffic fines are not included. The security deposit is only held on your credit card, not charged.
